Dual fuel combustion ignition engines to produce power from landfill gas

Prepared a North Carolina “SB3” Best Available Control Technology (BACT) analysis to accompany an air permit application for twelve dual fuel (diesel and landfill gas) combustion ignition engines to produce power from landfill gas. North Carolina air permit applications for renewable energy projects require a SB3 BACT analysis as an element to the application package. The analysis reviewed technologies to control NOx, CO, VOC, SO2, PM, lead, and mercury. Planned operation of the engines was 92% on landfill gas. Oxidation and reduction technologies were eliminated as candidates due to catalyst poisoning from oganosilicons present in landfill gas. Selected BACT controls were good combustion practices, turbochargers and aftercoolers, ultra-low sulfur diesel fuel, pre-combustion gas filtration, and proprietary control module.
